Message Its a fact that our engines are an interference design...so proper timing belt maintenance is a must if one cares about his/her engine.
But, I'd like to solicit everyone's experience on just how much paranoia we should have about our timing belts. I was looking at a TT that I was considering buying. A new timing belt was installed at 93,000 miles ( which was the 3rd timing belt to be on the engine including when the car was new; also new wp, auto-tensioner, idlers ). The car now has 116,000 miles ( only 23K miles on the tb now )...but the timing belt was done 7 years ago. Assuming a person isn't going to do the work themselves, its hard to spend $700-$1000 on a tb change for a belt that has this few miles on it...yet age is a factor just like miles.

So, how paranoid should we be about changing the belt ? Has anyone heard of one breaking that had less than 60K miles on it that was just old ? Does everyone recommend OEM or a "stronger" Gates type belt I've read about?
thanks.
